Judges Trophy Aerobatics Baragwanath-28 April 2018

By Bennie Henning

On Sunday 28 April 2019, the annual aerobatic contest season continued when the Judges Trophy organised by the Sport Aerobatic Club of South Africa, was held at the pristine Baragwanath Airfield, southwest of Johannesburg. The morning started off with blue skies over the airfield with a bit of smog towards the North. Participants arrived sequentially or together before the 08h30 pilots briefing that commenced shortly afterwards. The first competitor was in the air by 09h30.

The morning consisted of the 1st round of known sequences for the different classes that competed. After a slightly delayed lunch break the second round commenced with a round of unknown sequences for all classes. Wind changed between the two rounds and competitors had to enter the aerobatic box from the West. Most pilots stepped the unknown sequence through from the eastern side. Whilst one competitor was flying his sequence, another one was preparing for take-off and holding in the pattern outside the aerobatics box. Judges conferred after each pilot's display to discuss the points and comment on manoeuvres not done correctly to ensure consistency for all competitors. A few brief discussions between the pilots and judges during the lunch break commenced about points awarded in good spirit. Others had good flying displays and were congratulated.
