Like so many of us aviation enthusiasts, I first met Andrew at an airshow, where I was left spellbound by his breathtaking performance in his Zlín 50 and later in the Extra 300L, both proudly sponsored by Nashua.
As time went on, our paths crossed again when I began attending aerobatic competitions. Andrew was steadily climbing the ranks, first with his Zlín 50 and later the Extra 300L, still under Nashua's banner. In 2020, his dedication and skill were rewarded when he won the Intermediate Class National Championship, earning his promotion to the Advanced Class.
In support of his sponsor, Nashua, Andrew made it his mission to attend and perform at as many airshows as possible. The stunning blue-branded aircraft he flew became a much-loved sight on the South African airshow circuit, inspiring countless aviation fans.
Andrew's journey in aviation began in the South African Air Force, where he flew the iconic “schoolmaster of the skies,” the T-6 Harvard, as well as the Atlas Bosbok and Impala jets. Like many before him, he transitioned to South African Airways, where he went on to spend the next twenty-five years flying airliners with the same professionalism and dedication he displayed in aerobatics.
I had the privilege of flying with Andrew on many occasions to aerobatic competitions. His skill and professionalism made each flight a joy, and his willingness to share the wonder of aviation made him not just a great pilot, but also a true ambassador for both aerobatics and aviation as a whole.
My heartfelt condolences go out to Kyla and the rest of Andrew's family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Andrew. May your spirit soar forever.
