What was initially planned as a small “test” event to check our systems for a larger future Young Eagles Rally planned for June, turned into a full scale YE morning for EAA Chapter 973 at Jack Taylor Airfield, Krugersdorp this Saturday.
Our rally, part of EAA USA's Mission 2.5, was a contribution to the organization's mission to have flown 2 500 000 children by the start of AirVenture Oshkosh in July this year!
14 pilots and 38 Young Eagles turned up at the EAA Homebase, now attractively decorated in a bright and clean colour scheme. Dave Lister's futuristic LongEze parked up front added to mystique and excitement EAA brings.
Chapter 973 committee members went all out to make this a special memory for the children and young adults - hotdogs, chips and cooldrinks were available to all, while the unique position of the hangar, right on the runway, allowed them to be part of the action happening on the runway in front of them.
Thanks to the discipline, good airmanship and professionalism of the pilots, a successful, incident free event was achieved and some jittery nerves were put to rest.
The event ended in a ceremony where all Young Eagles were awarded wings and a certificate confirming they had qualified as a Young Eagle!
A big thanks to all who helped, flew, provided aircraft and participated in the rally - your involvement is truly appreciated!
