Brakpan Aero Club's 3rd Annual Fly-In

Yesterday's fly-in at Brakpan was advertised as the club's third annual fly-in. While technically correct, it hardly does justice to a club that ranks among the oldest in the country. Over the years Brakpan has hosted numerous gatherings, including an airshow, speed and fun rallies, several themed fly-ins, and even the Northern Regions leg of the South African Rally Championships.

I don't recall exactly when I first visited Brakpan, it was probably twenty-odd years ago. I do remember that Tony Kent was Chairman at the time.

During this time the club and its facilities have steadily grown into what visitors enjoy today. A new clubhouse with full kitchen facilities and a rather impressive bar has been built, while a modern ablution block, complete with showers, was recently added. Brakpan is also, as far as I know, the only airfield that boasts its own swimming pool.

The field, owned by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality with the Brakpan Aero Club as license holder, is always in excellent condition and ideal for large events, such as the Aero Club's Airweek.

The weather on Sunday was almost perfect, and the three flying schools based at the field took full advantage of the conditions, resulting in a steady stream of aircraft movements. By my count, close to thirty visiting aircraft arrived, while a good number of enthusiasts came by road.

Breakfast, very reasonably priced at R85.00, was truly delicious especially for a bachelor like me and the coffee was top notch.

I had barely arrived home when I received a message, trough social media, from the organisers, something that, as far as I can recall, was a first for me after any event. What a wonderful gesture and a fitting end to a thoroughly enjoyable morning.
